PREPARED. POLISHED. PROFESSIONAL.
Whether you're a new face in the industry or an experienced male model, preparing for a test shoot or fashion shoot is crucial for capturing striking images that elevate your portfolio.
The right preparation ensures that you look your best, feel confident, and maximize the opportunity to impress agencies, clients, and brands.
If you're about to shoot with me, follow these essential steps to prepare like a pro.
1. Skincare & Grooming: Look Your Best On Camera
- Hydrate & Moisturize: Drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated for a fresh, healthy glow.
- Exfoliate & Cleanse: Use a gentle exfoliator a few days before the shoot to remove dead skin cells and keep your complexion smooth.
- Avoid Sunburn & Irritation: Stay out of direct sun exposure and avoid harsh skin treatments right before your shoot.
- Shaving & Facial Hair: If clean-shaven, shave the night before to avoid redness. If you have facial hair, trim and groom it neatly.
- Eyebrows & Haircut: Get a fresh cut a few days before the shoot, and keep your eyebrows naturally groomed—no extreme reshaping.
- Manicured Nails & Toes: Ensure your nails are clean and neatly trimmed. If your feet will be visible, keep toenails well-groomed as well.
- Male Model Skincare Routine: Stick to a simple, effective skincare routine that keeps your skin clear and smooth for your test shoot.
2. Body Prep: Be Camera-Ready
- Maintain Your Physique: Stay active and exercise regularly, but avoid intense workouts a day before to prevent muscle fatigue or bloating.
- Eat Clean: Reduce salty and processed foods that cause water retention and bloating. Stick to lean proteins, vegetables, and whole foods.
- Sleep Well: A well-rested face looks more youthful and vibrant, so aim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep before your shoot.
3. Wardrobe & Styling: What to Wear
- Submit a Mood Board: Before your test shoot, submit a mood board to the photographer. This helps set the creative direction and ensures cohesive styling.
- Base Your Wardrobe on the Mood Board: Your outfit selection should align with the mood board’s aesthetic to create a consistent look.
- Bring Versatile Looks: For a test shoot, include a variety of outfits—casual, smart, and edgy. Stick to solid colors, classic fits, and pieces that enhance your physique.
- Fitted Clothing is Key: Avoid oversized or ill-fitting clothes. Well-tailored outfits accentuate your best features and create a polished look.
- Bring Clothing Ironed or Steamed: Wrinkled clothes can ruin an otherwise polished look. Make sure your outfits are neatly pressed.
- Ensure Clothes Are in Good Condition: Avoid extremely old or worn-out clothing. Choose pieces with vibrant colors that look fresh and well-maintained.
- Male Model Wardrobe Selection: Consider classic wardrobe staples that highlight your features and fit the style of the shoot.
- Undergarments Matter: Bring neutral, seamless underwear and avoid anything with heavy branding or patterns that may show through your clothing.
- Shoes & Accessories: Pack classic footwear like clean white sneakers, dress shoes, or boots, depending on the shoot style. Keep accessories minimal unless requested.
4. Posing & Expression: Practice Makes Perfect
- Know Your Best Angles: Study past photos or practice in the mirror to understand how your face and body look best on camera.
- Research Model Poses: Look at top male model portfolios, magazine editorials, and campaigns for inspiration.
- Relax & Be Natural: While practicing, avoid stiff or forced expressions—confidence and fluidity are key.
- Posing Tips for Male Models: Work on fluid transitions between poses and practice facial expressions to enhance versatility.
5. Mental Preparation: Confidence is Everything
- Understand the Shoot Concept: If the shoot has a theme, research it in advance to embody the right energy and vibe.
- Communicate with Your Photographer: I always guide models, but if you have preferences or ideas, don’t hesitate to share.
- Be Open to Direction: The best images often come from collaboration. Stay open to trying new poses, expressions, and creative directions.
- Breathe & Have Fun: Nerves can show in photos, so take deep breaths, stay present, and enjoy the experience.
- Male Model Confidence Tips: Confidence is key—walk into the shoot with assurance and let your personality shine through.
